Category Chats: Sarah Stockdale, Founder of Growclass

We sat down with one of our very first clients, Sarah Stockdale the Founder of Growclass, to chat all about building her business, her top advice for founders, how PR has contributed to growth and more.

Q1. What is Growclass?

Growclass is an education company that helps marketers build 6-figure careers and 7-figure businesses. We offer courses, including our award-winning 6-week growth marketing certification, coaching, and mentorship. Mostly, Growclass is a kind, helpful community— the boys club for folks who didn’t grow up with generational wealth.

Q2. What was the inspiration behind Growclass?

I built Growclass because I couldn’t find a space for women and underrepresented people to learn non-fluffy growth marketing skills. All of the offerings in the market weren’t specific to growth, had a lot of jargon and arrogance, or had really outdated digital marketing content. With years of experience in building growth teams and advising companies, I recognized the challenge of sourcing and training new talent. I wanted to create a place where women and underrepresented people could acquire tangible skills, build a real professional network, and accelerate their careers. A space that feels supportive and never intimidating.

Q3. What’s your number 1 piece of advice for other founders?

Build something that solves a real pain for a demographic of people you care about. Then, try to remember why you started every single day. Building a company requires a resilience for a comical amount of rejection. You’re going to hear no constantly. So, to survive it, you need to really really want what you’re building to exist in the world.

Q4. Our tagline is “We shape the story. You shape the Category” – we have to ask, how are you shaping your category?

Continuing education can get a bad rap, such as boring night courses or guru influencers shilling blog post-level ideas.

And that’s fair because, often, it’s true.

At Growclass, we’re shaping our category by redefining what professional education looks and feels like. Education doesn’t have to feel like a stressful yet completely impractical university course or an overly broad and boring night class. It can be fun and practical, with wraparound services that really foster student success. It can also be a source of rich adult friendships and support. That’s our category.

Q5. How has PR contributed to your success?

I’m great at doing the work; I’m not great at asking other people to write about the work we’re doing. Category is constantly finding us opportunities to tell the Growclass story, and the stories of our incredible alumni. It’s given me the chance to write in incredible publications, source new partnerships, and has helped immensely with course application growth. Category is the best there is.

Q6. Anything else you’d like to add? (Trick question – there’s always something to add as you know from media training!)

I’m so proud of the community we’ve built at Growclass. Within 60 days of completing the program, the average salary increase for our folks is $26,700— and in our last cohort alone, 74 of 131 our grads had secured completely new jobs within 60 days of graduation. No course does that— but a network can do that. Growclass grads are constantly posting roles, hopping on coffee chats, and hiring each other.

Because of the support of the Canadian Federal Government, Palette Skills, and the partnership of The Canadian Marketing Association and Jelly Academy, this year, we’ll give out scholarships to 500 underrepresented Canadians and help them break into higher-paying jobs. The freedom that comes with an extra 30k a year can be life changing.
